Above: The principle behind underwater gps
What is Underwater GPS?
Underwater GPS represents a recent innovation in sub-maratime navigation that has allowed divers and submariners to target and record their position, relative to the earth's surface, using an accurate GPS (Global Positioning System) fix.
Underwater GPS is set to revolutionise under sea navigation in the same way that conventional GPS revolutionised navigation on dry land.
Previously it was accepted that GPS would not work under water, the problem being, that the radio signals employed by GPS cannot pass through water. New developments have overtuned this old way of thinking - see How it works for details.
